THE GIRL FROM BORRO

Language: Spanish
In development.
A girl raised in El Borro, the most dangerous neighborhood in Uruguay, overcomes all obstacles to graduate as a teacher. She emigrates to Spain, cleans houses, and takes care of the elderly to make a living while she works on revalidating her teaching credentials. As the years go by, she receives an award recognizing her as the best teacher in Catalonia. Far from being satisfied, she sets out to fulfill a huge dream: to have her country enact a Law on Emotional Education, which she herself has drafted alongside a prestigious jurist.
Her childhood friend, on the other hand, sees no better option than prostitution to support herself and her baby, who have been abandoned by the father—a drug addict and criminal. After working for two years in a 'whiskería' (a euphemism for a brothel), she emigrates to Milan. Strong and independent, she refuses to submit to the control of a Serbian pimp, putting her life at risk. She flees to New Jersey, where, with cleverness and good fortune, she manages to accumulate a small amount of capital and begins to entertain the idea of opening a bakery for the Rioplatense community.
Since their early adulthood, the paths of these women diverge dramatically, but their friendship remains unbreakable despite the time, cultural differences, and geographical distance that separate them.

"La Niña del Borro" originates in Montevideo and spans Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Milan, and New Jersey, covering four decades.
